I regret to report that KSTY High School's lazer tag event will be postponed to a later date TBD. Please respond ASAP if you would be interested in attending. Come eat as many latkes as you can at our party on December 12th at 4 pm! We will cook tons and tons of different kinds of latkes and eat them up with sour cream, apple sauce, and all the fixings. But that's not all. We will also have a chocolate fountain and tons of stuff to dip. Do you like oreos, cookies, cake, pretzels, and fruit? I bet you would like them even more covered in chocolate. S'mores and Stories in the Sukkah

Come join KSTY's first event of the year! On Sunday, September 26th from 7-8:30 you can hang out in the sukkah with your friends, roast marshmallows over a fire, and listen to stories. Monday, May 3 will be the final class of the Israeli Culture Course. Join us from 7-8:30 for traditional Israeli Dancing!
4 of our members will be receiving Chagigat Torah award on Friday, May 14 at the 7:30 service. Please join us for this important and exciting event!
Our final event of the season will be a trip to Six Flags on Sunday, June 6. You MUST RSVP for this event NO LATER THAN MAY 24!!! We will meet in the Kerem Shalom parking lot and transportation will be in adult cars. You will need to download a permission slip from the Kerem Shalom website and the cost is...very exciting! The first three RSVPs will get in to the park for free. The next five get in for half price and everyone else gets $10 off admission. (regular admission is $42.) KSTY will pay for the gas, but you'll need lunch money (or you can pack one). Make sure you RSVP to jodylukbob@hotmail.com asap!

Our Israeli culture course is well underway but we hope you'll join us for the next two classes! On Monday, April 12 we will hold the "day in the life" class from 7-8:30! That date will also be an important board meeting from 6-7. We will be voting on a new board for next year! ISRAELI CULTURE CLASS

Come learn about life in Israel! The first class of this course will be on March 15 from 6:30-8:30. We will be cooking and eating Israeli food! YUMMY!
The second class, April 12 from 7-8:30, will be all about a teenager's life in Israel today. Come learn about "a day in the life!"
The final class, May 3 7-8:30, will be lead by Becca Rausch, an Israeli dance teacher. We will learn Israeli dancing together!

TUBING RESCHEDULED, PURIM EVENT!

KSTY has rescheduled our tubing event to Sunday, February 28 and combining it with the Purim Carnival! It is a Kerem Shalom tradition that the youth group runs the Purim Carnival. Please join us for this fun event!
9am: Meet at the temple to set up for the carnival
10-11am: Run booths at the carnival
11-12: break down the carnival and eat some pizza!
12:00 drive over to Nashoba Valley
12:30-2:30 Snow Tubing at Nashoba-$5 off admission to anyone who helps with set up/running/break down of the Carnival!
2:45: Parents pick up in the Nashoba Valley parking lot.

If you would like to attend any portion of this event, please email Jody at ks.highschool@verizon.net by February 22. The cost for snowtubing is $25 (or $20 if you help with the carnival.) You will also need a permission slip if you're going tubing!

Kerem Shalom 8-12 Graders pay attention! KSTY (our youth group) and KSHS (Our high school program) are in full swing and we can’t wait for YOU to join us! In November, our conversational Hebrew Class kicks off on Monday the 2^nd. This class will teach you the basics of speaking Hebrew and will even include a restaurant meal where you will use what you have learned! The first class begins at 7pm on the 2^nd, and the following classes will be November 16 at 6:30 and November 30 at 6:30. Please RSVP to ks.highschool@verizon.net if you will participate in this class. Also in November, we will have a field trip/event to Fanueil Hall/Quincy Market for a scavenger hunt and yummy treats! This field trip will leave from the Alewife Train Station at 12:30 pm. If you would like to attend, you MUST rsvp to ks.highschool@verizon.net and you will also need to bring a permission slip . The field trip is free, but you will need money for lunch (about $15).

Are you ready to make a (yummy) mess? KSHS Cooking Class is back by popular demand! 8th graders, here is your chance to take part in the class that disrupted so many of your seventh grade seminars! 9th-12th graders, this class has often filled to capacity so sign up early! Even if you've taken the class before, join us again because this year is all new recipes. The first cooking class is October 5 at 7pm.

This year October is Mitzvah MONTH for KSTY. We're participating in the Crop Walk on October 18 and also doing a project for Buddy Dog at Mitzvah Day on October 25. Please join us for these important social action events.

Who- all Kerem Shalom members fourth grade and up!

Where- Everett Street, Concord, MA (Emerson Playground)

There will be two 45 minute sessions. The first will be ultimate Frisbee and whiffleball. The second will be capture the flag and soccer. You can choose which game you want to play!

Chagigat Torah

We hope you'll join us on Friday night, May 8 for Chagigat Torah. Two of our KSTY board members, Hannah Friedman and Lauren O'Callaghan will be honored at this service.

We will begin with a special Shabbat dinner at 6pm at the temple. If you are available to help set up, we could use any extra hands at 5:30! Services begin at 8pm and will be followed by an Oneg with baked goods from our Shabbat class afterward. Our new board will be announced at the service as well! Hello KSTY!

We've been asked to volunteer at the New Member Passover event from 2-4 on Sunday MArch 22nd, so we're planning to do that instead of Roller Skating. Pat has offered to treat us to a fun evening as a thank you, so we'll be heading over to Acton Bowladrome for bowling and pizza afterwards. If you'd be interested in doing this activity, please RSVP asap! Details:

2. Bowling and Pizza at Acton Bowladrome 3/22 4-6:30pm

If you are bowling, you will need a permission slip! See one in your email attachment, download it from the KS website or get it from Jody on the day of!

Jody will arrange/provide transportation from the temple to Acton. Pick up will be in at the Bowladrome at 6:30.

Upcoming Events and Board Opportunities

I know March seems like a far-off time, but there are some important upcoming events you'll want to plan ahead for! KSTY begins getting ready for a new year at our March Board Meeting (3/2 6:00-7:00pm)! We will be voting for new board members at this time. Currently, the following board positions are open for 2009-10:

Membership Outreach Coordinator

Event Coordinator

Vice President of Social Action

We would like to invite any current 8th graders or above to run for any of these positions. If you would like to run, please email Jody by February 20. Voting for all positions will occur at our March 2 meeting which is open to all KSTY members.

In addition, we would like to open up the board to include more members next year, so if you would like to be on the board but not one of these positions, please let Jody know.

Also in March, we will begin our last class of the season-Shabbat! We'll learn about the rules and laws of Shabbat, do some learning about Havdallah and finding peace and, of course, cook some Shabbat food! Please join us on March 2 at 7pm for the first class. March is also our Purim Carnival on the 8th. If you would like to help out on our prep day, meet at the temple at 6pm on Thursday the 5. To help out the day of, meet at the temple at 10am on the 8th. Come Roller Skating on March 22 too! Whew! What a busy month!

Happy New Year! January will be a great month for KSTY. Our first board meeting of 2009 will be on Monday, January 12 from 6:00-7pm. Thursday, January 15th will be the first night of our three-part Passover class, led by Linda Burton. The other two dates for this class will be Thursday February 5 and Thursday February 26. Please RSVP for the class if you would like to participate. Our next event is snowtubing on January 25 at 12:00. We will meet at Nashoba in Westford at noon and snowtube for 2 hours! You will need a PERMISSION SLIP so please download it from the KS website or bring a parent/guardian with you to sign it there. The cost is $12 per person. Please RSVP! The deadline for Snowtube RSVPs is January 15, so make sure to email ks.highschool@verizon.net, or call (978)443-2444 to tell Jody you're coming.

November's Quincy Market field trip was a great time and our social action class is now all wrapped up. We've decided to work with two organizations for our project-one helps to create garden plots for families and individuals in need, and the other is Open Table! Now on to December:

We have a short break in classes right now, but our December event is not to be missed! On December 14, bring a friend to Kerem Shalom for our Hannukah party! From 12-2 we will eat yummy food, make our own latkes, have a ping pong tournament and create our own menorahs. Admission is free, but please bring a non-perishable food item to donate, and of course, bring a friend! Your friend does not need to be a temple member, or even be Jewish-this is a great opportunity to share our holiday with others!

November Events

October was fun, but November will be a blast! Our second course, Social Action, is now in full swing. There is room for more students, though, so if you'd like to join in, please contact Jody at ks.highschool@verizon.net to sign up. We're looking at how Judaism views Social Action and planning and implementing our own social action project! The class meets November 3, November 17 and December 1. Our field trip will be announced after we decide on the project!

Also in November is the Quincy Market Scavenger Hunt. We will be leaving from Alewife Train Station at 11am and taking the train into Fanuiel Hall. Then we'll do a food/blessing based scavenger hunt before we come back on the train. We'll be back to Alewife at 3pm. RSVP is a must! I need to know how many people are coming! Please email ks.highschool@verizon.net to let us know!

Also look in your mailbox for a flyer and postcard from KSTY and KSHS. All High School aged students at Kerem Shalom should be receiving one in the next week. If you send the postcard back, we will be sure you receive a personal email or phone call to let you know about upcoming events and classes!

September was a great month and the kick-off was a blast! Now on to October with even more fun events planned.

Sunday, October 19 is the Museum of Science Trip. If you would like to go, an RSVP is a must! Please email Jody at ks.highschool@verizon.net Here's the plan:

We'll meet at the Alewife Train Station out in front where the taxis wait at 10am. We'll take the train into the museum where we will hang out and also eat lunch. We'll come back home on the train. Parents should plan to meet us back in Alewife around 3pm. If you're coming you'll need three things: Money for admission and lunch ($19 to get in, about $10 for lunch), a permission slip (can be signed on the spot at Alewife when you're dropped off) and you must RSVP by Wednesday, October 15!

Next up is Mitzvah Day on Sunday October 26. We'll be running a carwash to benefit Savedarfur.org and the Kerem Shalom building fund. Come on by if you'd like to help out!

Our cooking course will wrap up with its remaining class on Monday October 27 at 6:30pm. Come at 6:00 if you want to eat dinner first!

September Events/Classes:

On September 8, we will have our first board meeting of the new year. If you have any agenda items, please email them to ks.highschool@verizon.net (Jody). If you are on the board, we're expecting you. Please email Jody if you can't make it.

September 22 will be the first day of this fall's cooking class. The class has been great fun in the past and we hope you'll come cook (AND EAT!) yummy Jewish holiday and traditional foods. This class will meet three times, September 22, October 6 and October 27. We will end with a food-based scavenger hunt field trip in Fanieul Hall! This class has a limit of 10 people, so act quickly! The teacher will be Jody Kelley. If you'd like to participate in the class, please contact Jody by emailing ks.highschool@verizon.net.

Our first event, the KSTY Kick Off, will be September 28 from 2-4 pm. Come to KS for Pizza, Ping Pong in our new youth room and planning of future events! (Also schmoozing and hanging out.) Please RSVP for this event to KSTYadvisor@comcast.net by September 20. (so we make sure to have enough pizza for you!)
